In the early morning hours of November 8, 2020, the life of 28-year-old Delvontae Le'Quan Boone was tragically cut short in Franklin, Virginia. Responding to a call of shots fired around 2:37 a.m. in the 600 block of Oak Street, police discovered Boone suffering from a gunshot wound. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Delvontae, a 2012 graduate of Franklin High School, was a well-rounded athlete who participated in football, basketball, and baseball.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Franklin and was a father to four children. Known to his friends by the nickname 'Popcorn,' he was described as comical and very generous.
The investigation into Boone's death led the Franklin Police Department to identify a suspect. Arrest warrants were obtained for 29-year-old Melkwane Remony Mitchell, who was considered armed and dangerous. The search for Mitchell continued for months.
On August 9, 2021, nearly nine months after the shooting, Melkwane Mitchell turned himself in to the Franklin Police Department. He was subsequently taken to the Western Tidewater Regional Jail and faced charges of felony homicide and reckless handling of a firearm in connection with Delvontae Boone's death.
