In the early morning hours of October 20, 2018, the life of 23-year-old Richard Ferrell was tragically cut short in Franklin, Virginia. A resident of the Southampton Meadows Mobile Home Park, Ferrell was on Carter Street when an altercation involving several people broke out. The dispute escalated, resulting in a fatal shooting.
Law enforcement from the Southampton County Sheriff's Office responded to the incident, which occurred around 12:41 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered that Ferrell had been fatally wounded. Initial confusion arose at the scene when an ID from New Jersey was found, leading investigators to believe the victim might be from out of state. However, it was soon confirmed that the man was indeed Richard Ferrell, a local resident. Fortunately, no one else was injured during the altercation.
Despite the immediate launch of an investigation into Ferrell's death, the case has remained unsolved. The Southampton County Sheriff's Office has made public appeals for information, urging anyone with knowledge of the shooting to come forward and contact Lt. Camden Cobb or to provide anonymous tips through the Southampton/Franklin Crime Line. To date, there have been no arrests made in connection with the homicide, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation remains open as authorities continue to seek the information needed to bring those responsible for Richard Ferrell's death to justice.
