In the summer of 2019, the life of 23-year-old Jack Taylor Sykes III was cut short in a fatal shooting in Franklin, Virginia. The events that led to his death began with an altercation a week prior, during which Sykes reportedly struck Shakeem Laquan Bryant in the head with a revolver. In the days that followed, Bryant became focused on finding Sykes, making inquiries as to his identity and whereabouts.
On the evening of August 4, 2019, Bryant located Sykes at the Dorchester Apartments on Dorchester Street. There, in a ground-floor entryway, Bryant shot Sykes at close range. Sykes was found with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and upper right arm. Though still alive when police arrived, he succumbed to his injuries. Bryant fled the scene and was later apprehended.
Following an investigation, Shakeem Bryant was arrested and charged with murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. During his trial in Southampton County Circuit Court, Bryant claimed he acted in self-defense, asserting that he believed Sykes was armed and posed an imminent threat.
The prosecution presented evidence of premeditation, detailing Bryant's efforts to locate Sykes and obtain a weapon in the week leading up to the shooting. After a five-day trial, the jury rejected Bryant's claim of self-defense and found him guilty of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Bryant later appealed the conviction, but the Court of Appeals of Virginia affirmed the jury's verdict, solidifying the legal conclusion to the tragic death of Jack Sykes III.
