In the early morning hours of April 25, 2015, the vibrant atmosphere of College Beach Weekend at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront was shattered by a single act of violence that claimed the life of 20-year-old Stratton Mitchell. A Black male from Chesapeake, Virginia, Mitchell was with friends when their paths crossed with another group of men, leading to a fatal confrontation.
The tragic sequence of events began around 3:16 a.m. in the 2500 block of Atlantic Avenue.
Mitchell and his friends were accompanying a female high school acquaintance to her car when they encountered another group that included 21-year-old Tevin Anyee Oliver, a sailor stationed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. An argument escalated, and at one point, Mitchell reportedly knocked a member of Oliver's group to the ground. In response, Oliver drew a. 40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun and fired a shot, striking Mitchell in the back. Despite being grievously wounded, Mitchell managed to stumble across Atlantic Avenue before collapsing in a hotel parking lot. Emergency services rushed him to a local hospital, but his life could not be saved.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, and Tevin Anyee Oliver was identified as the suspect. He was arrested and initially charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Oliver was later released on a $25,000 bond. Ultimately, the case went to trial, and a judge sentenced Oliver on a conviction of involuntary manslaughter. His sentence included ten years in prison with six years suspended, to be followed by a period of supervised probation.
The sudden and violent death of Stratton Mitchell left his family and a wide circle of friends devastated. Remembered as a kind, caring, and genuine individual who had recently started a new job at a Food Lion, his loss was deeply felt in his community. Many recalled him as a mentor and a loyal friend. Over a hundred people gathered for a vigil in his honor at a park in Chesapeake, sharing memories and calling for an end to such senseless violence.
