On a tragic Wednesday afternoon, June 3, 2015, the life of 19-year-old Kevonne D. M. Turner was cut short by violence in Newport News, Virginia. The young man was discovered shot in front of an apartment building in the 3600 block of Madison Avenue around 5:30 p.m. Born on June 30, 1995, to Claudia Turner and Kevin Titus, Kevonne was just a month shy of his twentieth birthday.
Known for his outgoing, charismatic, and humorous personality, he had the ability to bring a smile to anyone's face.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, a sense of shock and grief enveloped his family and the community. His mother, Claudia Turner, publicly expressed her profound sorrow, describing herself as 'broken' and 'crushed.' She, along with other family members, lamented the senseless act of violence that had taken her son, who had plans to either attend college or enlist in the military. Despite the presence of numerous onlookers at the scene, there was an initial reluctance from witnesses to come forward with information, hampering the early stages of the investigation.
The investigation into Kevonne Turner's death led to a significant development just over a week later. On June 11, 2015, detectives from the Newport News Police Department arrested a 17-year-old male at his home in Hampton. Due to his status as a juvenile, his name was not publicly released.
