In the late afternoon of August 20, 2015, Antonio C. Scott, a 31-year-old man, was tragically killed in his Portsmouth, Virginia home. The violent intrusion shattered the peace of the residence on Florida Avenue, where Scott was with his sister and his seven-year-old daughter. Two armed men, later identified as Alfred Lane and Christian Burden, forced their way into the home around 2:45 p.m.
A struggle ensued in the hallway between Scott and Lane, culminating in Lane firing a gun.
In the ensuing chaos, more shots were fired, and Scott was struck five times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The terrifying ordeal continued for Scott's sister, who had hidden under her bed after the initial shot. The intruders forced her out from her hiding place, demanding she not call the police. Lane then took the keys from Scott's pocket to search his bedroom for drugs and money, even forcing the sister to assist in the search. The men ultimately fled with a bag of marijuana.
Following the investigation into the homicide, both Alfred Lane and Christian Burden were arrested and charged. In March 2016, a jury convicted Alfred Lane, who was 24 at the time, on multiple felony charges. His convictions included first-degree murder, armed statutory burglary, robbery, abduction, and three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The jury recommended a sentence of 69 years in prison for his role in the murder of Antonio Scott.
