In the late hours of a Wednesday evening, the life of 22-year-old Marquel Lamont Davis, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On November 18, 2015, in an apartment in the Hybla Valley area of Alexandria, Virginia, what began as a family gathering watching television erupted into violence. An assailant entered the residence and opened fire, unleashing multiple shots. In the chaos that ensued, Davis was fatally wounded. Two other men, aged 21 and 27, also sustained gunshot wounds but survived their injuries. Davis was rushed to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify 21-year-old Andre Curtis Wilkins as the suspect. Initially, on December 4, 2015, Wilkins was apprehended and charged with malicious wounding in connection with the incident. By December 11, while he was already in custody at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, the charges against him were upgraded to include the murder of Marquel Davis. The motive for the shooting was believed to be a dispute that occurred inside the apartment.
The legal proceedings against Andre Curtis Wilkins culminated in a conviction for the murder of Marquel Davis. In 2016, a judge sentenced Wilkins to a total of 70 years in prison. The sentence was composed of 40 years for the murder charge, 20 years for malicious wounding, and an additional 13 years for firearms-related offenses, bringing a measure of closure to the violent end of a young man's life.
