In the quiet city of Portsmouth, Virginia, the life of 26-year-old Monique Landis, a female, was tragically cut short on December 1, 2015. On that day, police were called to an apartment on Gateway Drive where they made a grim discovery. Landis was found inside, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to her upper body. Medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene, and investigators immediately classified her death as a homicide.
The initial investigation quickly pointed to a person of interest: 52-year-old Darryl Faine of Portsmouth. Authorities believed he possessed crucial information regarding the killing. As the investigation progressed, Faine was officially identified as the suspect, and a warrant for his arrest on charges of second-degree murder and other related offenses was issued. However, by this time, Faine had vanished, sparking a manhunt that would last for more than two years. Investigators believed he may have fled to New Jersey shortly after the murder and also spent time in the Jacksonville, Florida area.
For over two years, Darryl Faine remained a fugitive, successfully evading capture. He lived under the alias 'Carl Jones,' taking on under-the-table jobs and frequently moving between different residences to avoid detection. The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force joined the search, offering a reward for information leading to his arrest. The breakthrough in the case finally came in March 2018.
Acting on tips, the U.S. Marshals, in collaboration with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, located the then 54-year-old Faine in Jacksonville, Florida. He was taken into custody without incident during a traffic stop. Faine was subsequently held at the Duval County Jail in Jacksonville as he awaited extradition back to Virginia to face the charges against him for the murder of Monique Landis. He was extradited to Portsmouth to stand trial for his alleged crimes.
