In the quiet community of Chesapeake, Virginia, the life of Steven Todd Dooley, a 50-year-old retired police officer, came to a tragic and unexpected end on January 27, 2016. A man who had dedicated nearly 25 years to serving and protecting his community became a victim of a devastating act of violence that would claim the lives of six family members.
The events of that winter day unfolded after police were called to perform a welfare check at a residence on Wildwood Road, where they made a grim discovery.
Inside the home, officers found the body of 22-year-old Landon Dooley, Steven's son. This initial finding quickly escalated the situation, leading investigators just a few blocks away to another family home on North George Washington Highway. There, they found 26-year-old Cameron Dooley, Steven's other son, armed and barricaded inside. For several hours, police negotiators attempted to make contact and bring a peaceful resolution to the standoff.
When officers finally made entry into the second home in the early hours of the following morning, the full scope of the tragedy was revealed. They discovered the bodies of five more people, including Cameron, who had taken his own life. The victims were identified as Steven Todd Dooley; his wife, Lori Dooley, 54; their 17-year-old daughter, Brooke; and Steven's 74-year-old mother, Doris Dooley. The medical examiner later confirmed that Steven and the other four family members died from gunshot wounds to the head, while Cameron Dooley died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
The investigation concluded that Cameron Dooley was the sole perpetrator of the killings. As the primary suspect was deceased, no arrests were made, and the case was closed as a murder-suicide. The motive behind the horrific event remained unclear, leaving a community that knew the Dooleys as a religious, hard-working, and respected family in a state of shock and mourning. Steven, known to his friends as Todd, was remembered as a well-respected and easygoing officer who had been active with the police department's dive team and marine patrol before his recent retirement.
