In the summer of 2016, the life of a promising young woman was tragically cut short on the streets of Norfolk, Virginia. Teresa Hunter, a 28-year-old Black female, was shot and killed on the evening of June 24th in the Huntersville neighborhood. Remembered for her ambition and kind spirit, her sudden death left a community in mourning and a family searching for answers that have yet to come.
Well-liked and full of potential, Teresa had recently earned her Associate of Science Degree from
Tidewater Community College in December 2015. She was known for her passion for basketball, having been a graduate of Granby High School. Her friends and family recalled her as a positive influence, someone who encouraged others to strive for better.
On that fateful Friday night, at approximately 11:45 p.m., Norfolk police responded to reports of gunshots in the 800 block of A Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered Teresa on the sidewalk, suffering from a gunshot wound. Medics pronounced her dead at the scene. Another woman was also a victim of the shooting, having sustained non-life-threatening injuries. She was able to transport herself to a local hospital for treatment.
The Norfolk Police Department promptly launched a homicide investigation into Teresa's death. Detectives canvassed the area and appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible. Despite their efforts and the pleas of a heartbroken community, no suspects were immediately identified, and no arrests were made in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. The case remains an open investigation, a painful unsolved chapter for her loved ones and the city of Norfolk.
