In the late hours of a summer evening in Norfolk, Virginia, tragedy struck, forever altering the lives of those connected to Amira Y. James-Rodgers. On August 23, 2021, a call reporting a gunshot victim dispatched police to a home in the 1600 block of Kingsway Road. Just before midnight, officers arrived to find 41-year-old Amira Y. James-Rodgers, a Black female, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate response, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The initial investigation by Norfolk Police detectives swiftly pointed to the incident being domestic in nature. This conclusion narrowed the focus of their inquiry and led them to a person of interest. As a result of the evidence gathered, authorities arrested 36-year-old Julius A. Herring of Norfolk. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Following his arrest, Herring was taken to the Norfolk City Jail where he was held without bond, awaiting the progression of the legal proceedings against him.
