A promising future was tragically cut short for 19-year-old Angelia McKnight, a female student at Norfolk State University, who was killed in a mass shooting in the early morning hours of September 4, 2022. Known to her loved ones as 'Angie,' the Harlem, New York native was a sophomore and pre-nursing major with a passion for dance and a reputation for her bright, bubbly personality.
On that Saturday night, Angelia was attending an off-campus party on Killam Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia,
that had been advertised on social media. Shortly after midnight, a fight broke out at the gathering. The altercation escalated horrifically when at least one individual brandished a firearm and began shooting into the crowd. The chaos that ensued left seven people with gunshot wounds.
Angelia was one of the victims caught in the gunfire. She and another individual, 25-year-old Zabre Miller, sustained life-threatening injuries and were rushed to a local hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. Five other people were also wounded in the incident. Investigators at the scene recovered evidence suggesting that multiple firearms were used, including a pistol and a long gun.
In the wake of the shooting, friends and family remembered Angelia as a beautiful person inside and out, who was proudly one of the first in her family to attend college. The Norfolk State University community mourned the loss of their student, described as an innocent bystander in the senseless act of violence.
