In the quiet community of Sanford, Virginia, a young woman's life was tragically cut short, leaving behind a grieving family and a future unrealized. Elizabeth Madison Ann Jensen, a 20-year-old Caucasian female, was known for her love of horseback riding and her friendly demeanor at the Food Lion in Oak Hall where she worked. Her life, however, took a devastating turn on July 16, 2016.
On that summer day, deputies from the Accomack County Sheriff's Office were called to a grim scene at
the end of Pierce Taylor Road near Mappsville. Inside a vehicle, they discovered the bodies of Elizabeth and her 27-year-old boyfriend, Jonan Fabricio Gonzales-Funes of Bloxom. Both had sustained apparent gunshot wounds. In the backseat of the car, miraculously unharmed, was the couple's infant child. The baby was later placed in the care of family members.
The investigation into the deaths quickly pointed towards a murder-suicide. Authorities believe that Gonzales-Funes, who had been employed as a correctional officer with the Accomack County Sheriff's Office since September 2015, shot and killed Elizabeth before turning the gun on himself. The tragic event sent shockwaves through the community, as friends and family mourned the loss of a young mother and grappled with the violent circumstances of her death. The bodies of both Elizabeth and Gonzales-Funes were sent to the medical examiner's office for autopsy to confirm the details of the incident.
