On the evening of March 27, 2024, a domestic argument in a Norfolk, Virginia, apartment escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 35-year-old Jessica Ayers, a female. The incident occurred at her home in the 600 block of Dudley Avenue, where she lived with her child, her boyfriend Quinton Dwyan Wade, and his two children.
An argument between Ayers and Wade began in the living room while the children were playing video games. To remove her child from the escalating conflict, Ayers took him to a shared bedroom and closed the door. Wade followed them and continued the argument from the other side of the door. When Ayers opened the door to confront him, she was met with the sight of Wade holding a gun. Startled, she fell backward and tried to retrieve a handgun she kept under one of the children's beds for protection.
Before she could reach her weapon, Ayers stood up in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. However, Wade shot her once in the abdomen. He then fled the apartment in Ayers' car. Emergency services were called, and Ayers was transported to a local hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The following day, Quinton D. Wade, then 37 years old, turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm.
In April, Quinton Dwyan Wade, then 38, pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of Jessica Ayers as part of a plea agreement. In exchange for his guilty plea, a related firearm charge was dismissed. He was sentenced to serve 15 years in prison, with another 10 years suspended. Following his release, he will be on supervised probation for five years. The Commonwealth's Attorney noted that the guilty plea spared Ayers' son from having to testify about his mother's death.
