In the early morning hours of August 16, 2016, the quiet of Saint Stephens Church, Virginia, was shattered by violence. Inside his home, 24-year-old James Edward 'Scooter' Byrd, a Black male, was shot and killed. His younger brother, who was also in the house at the time, was awakened by the disturbance. He witnessed a hooded figure leaving the home and a car speeding away from the scene.
He then ran to a neighbor's house to call for help.
When deputies from the King and Queen County Sheriff's Office arrived, they found Byrd deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators found no signs of forced entry, leading them to believe that Byrd may have known his attacker or attackers. A witness who was inside the residence reported hearing several suspects at the time of the incident. Evidence suggested a calculated effort to remain unseen, as a lightbulb on the porch had been unscrewed, plunging the entrance into darkness.
The investigation into Byrd's death was launched by the King and Queen County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Virginia State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. While robbery was considered a possible motive, nothing was reported stolen from the home. A significant breakthrough in the case came when the murder weapon was recovered in Richmond, Virginia, and confirmed through laboratory analysis.
Despite this discovery, the case remains an active and ongoing homicide investigation. Law enforcement officials believe there was a single shooter accompanied by several accomplices who acted as lookouts. To date, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the death of James Edward 'Scooter' Byrd.
