In the early morning hours of August 16, 2016, the quiet of Saint Stephens Church, Virginia, was shattered by violence. Inside his home, 24-year-old James Edward 'Scooter' Byrd, a Black male, was shot and killed. His younger brother, who was also in the house at the time, was awakened by the disturbance. He witnessed a hooded figure leaving the home and a car speeding away from the scene. He then ran to a neighbor's house to call for help.
