In the quiet of a Monday evening, a fatal altercation unfolded in the Groveton area of Fairfax County, claiming the life of 38-year-old Darryl Roberts of Washington, D.C. The incident, which occurred on April 7, 2025, escalated from a dispute to a deadly shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Jon Paul Drive. Responding to a call about an unconscious man around 8:27 p.m., police discovered Roberts with gunshot wounds to his upper body. Despite the life-saving efforts of the officers who first arrived, Roberts was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to 35-year-old Paul Brown, also from Washington, D.C., as the individual involved in the altercation with Roberts. It was established that the two men knew each other. In a surprising turn, Brown himself contacted the Alexandria Police Department of Emergency Communications at 8:24 p.m., just minutes before Roberts was found, to report that he had shot a man who had assaulted him. Following the shooting, Brown fled the scene in a stolen Nissan Sentra and was spotted by Virginia State Police on Richmond Highway. A police pursuit was initiated but was soon terminated for the safety of the public.
Through a coordinated effort involving the Fairfax County, Alexandria, and Metropolitan Police Departments, Paul Brown was later located at his residence in Washington, D.C. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries before being transferred to the D.C. Central Detention Facility. Brown now faces charges of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is currently awaiting extradition to Fairfax County to face these charges.
