Jarod Tyrell Buford, a 22-year-old Black male from Petersburg, Virginia, was shot and killed on Friday, September 23, 2016, in Richmond. The events leading to his death began to unfold just before 6 p.m. on the city's Southside. Richmond Police initially responded to a call of a person shot in the 4100 block of Midlothian Turnpike, near the Midlothian Village Apartments.
When officers arrived at that location, they did not find a victim.
Shortly thereafter, investigators located Buford inside a vehicle at the intersection of West 32nd Street and Midlothian Turnpike, near Swansboro Elementary School. It was determined that the shooting had occurred at the first location on Midlothian Turnpike, and the vehicle then moved to where Buford was found. He was suffering from gunshot wounds and was rushed to VCU Medical Center, where he ultimately died from his injuries. The medical examiner was tasked with determining the official cause and manner of death. His death marked the 44th homicide in the city of Richmond for 2016.
The Richmond Police Department opened an investigation into the homicide of Jarod Buford. To date, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in the case. The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have continued to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest, encouraging witnesses or those with knowledge of the crime to contact Crime Stoppers.
