In the quiet historic city of Alexandria, Virginia, the life of 75-year-old Rolf Marshall, a distinguished male and retired Navy captain, came to a sudden and violent end on the morning of October 5, 2016. Inside his home on Duke Street, a heated argument, fueled by alcohol, escalated to a fatal conclusion. The dispute centered on the couple's aging Akita, a source of contention between Marshall and his then 47-year-old wife, Paula Thompson Marshall. For months, Paula had advocated for euthanizing the dog, a suggestion her husband resisted.
The argument took a deadly turn when a. 38-caliber revolver was introduced into the conflict. According to Paula Marshall's later account to a 911 dispatcher, her husband had tossed her the gun, declaring, 'Here's a loaded gun. If you want to shoot it, go ahead.' A single shot was fired, striking Rolf Marshall in the torso as he sat in his armchair. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Neighbors, who had often heard the couple arguing, were nonetheless shocked by the tragic outcome.
Paula Marshall was arrested and charged with her husband's murder on the same day. Her initial claim to the 911 operator was that the shooting was an accident, stating, 'I didn't know it was loaded.
