In the late hours of an April evening in Norfolk, Virginia, the life of 34-year-old Zuton T. Carpenter, a male resident of the city, was tragically cut short. On April 20, 2017, shortly before 10:45 p.m., police responded to a call of a gunshot disturbance in the 800 block of Bagnall Road. Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered Carpenter suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
He was swiftly transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The case was immediately classified as a homicide by detectives who began an intensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The investigation led to a swift arrest in the case. Just days later, on a Tuesday, Norfolk police took 29-year-old Maurice A. Hyman into custody without incident in the 2700 block of McKann Avenue. Hyman, a resident of the 5600 block of Tidewater Drive, was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with Carpenter's death. Following his arrest, Hyman was held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond as the legal process began to unfold.
In a dramatic and unforeseen turn of events, the charges against Maurice A. Hyman were ultimately dropped. Before a trial could take place to determine his guilt or innocence in the shooting of Zuton Carpenter, Hyman himself became a victim of gun violence. In June of 2018, Hyman was shot and killed in a separate incident, bringing an unexpected and somber end to his involvement in the case. With the sole suspect in Zuton Carpenter's murder deceased, the path to legal resolution took a different and more complex turn, leaving the community to grapple with the layers of tragedy that had unfolded.
