In the spring of 2017, the life of 16-year-old Daequan Gwynn was tragically cut short in Hampton, Virginia. On the evening of April 20th, Daequan left his home in the Wythe section of the city with two friends. It was the last time his family would see him alive. The following morning, around 11:30 a.m. on April 21, 2017, his body was discovered by neighbors in an alleyway, merely five blocks from his residence.
An investigation into his death revealed that he had sustained fatal gunshot
wounds. Residents in the area reported hearing two gunshots at approximately 9:25 p.m. the previous night, just a short time after Daequan had left his house. Despite the reports of gunfire, no witnesses came forward with a clear account of what had transpired. Authorities did receive a description of a male wearing a grey and black hoodie seen walking toward Shell Road after the shots were heard.
As of early 2018, nearly a year after the incident, no arrests had been made in connection with the murder of Daequan Gwynn, and the case remained unsolved. His mother expressed her profound grief and frustration with the lack of progress, pleading for anyone with information, including the friends who were with him that night, to come forward and help bring justice for her son. The Hampton Police Division has listed the case as an active homicide investigation.
