In the late afternoon of a December day, a young man's life was abruptly cut short in a burst of violence. Iquan Malik McClain, a 23-year-old male from Newport News, was fatally shot on Saturday, December 15, 2018, in Hampton, Virginia. The incident unfolded in the parking lot of a Family Dollar on Aberdeen Road, where McClain was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds shortly after 3 p.m. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene following a report of shots fired.
McClain was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, but tragically, he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide revealed that the act was not random. Hampton police indicated that McClain and the individuals involved were known to each other. Surveillance footage reportedly showed them talking and spending time together before the shooting. In the immediate aftermath, multiple suspects were seen fleeing the scene on foot in the direction of Mercury Boulevard. The investigation quickly led to the identification of two persons of interest from Newport News.
Authorities identified Breshard Ranard Turner, then 21 years old, as the primary suspect in the shooting. Warrants were issued for his arrest on charges of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and carrying a concealed weapon. Another man, 23-year-old Rashad Lamont Langley, was identified as being present during the incident and was wanted for questioning, with an active warrant for shoplifting related to the event.
For over a year, Turner remained at large. The search for him intensified in July 2019 when the U.S. Marshals Service offered a reward for information leading to his arrest. The collaborative efforts of the Hampton Police Division, the Newport News Police Department, and the U.S. Marshals Task Force eventually led to a breakthrough. Breshard Ranard Turner was located and apprehended in California. He was subsequently extradited back to Hampton to face the charges in connection with the death of Iquan Malik McClain.
