On the evening of May 31, 2017, the life of 23-year-old Fenqwon Tayshon Payne was cut short in Danville, Virginia. Responding to a call around 6:45 p.m., police and emergency services discovered Payne unresponsive inside a residence in the 700 block of Bradley Road. He was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds and, despite medical efforts, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the young man's death would stretch on for over three years, leaving a community searching for answers.
For years, detectives followed leads and worked closely with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office to piece together the events that led to Payne's killing. The persistence of the investigation finally culminated in a major breakthrough in August 2020. A Danville grand jury returned indictments against Quadarius D. Wilson, a 28-year-old former resident of Danville who had since relocated to the Roanoke area. Wilson, who was an acquaintance of Payne, was charged with first-degree murder and related firearms offenses.
Following the indictment, the U.S. Marshals Service located and arrested Wilson without incident at his place of employment in Roanoke County on August 28, 2020. He was subsequently transported back to Danville and held in the city jail without bond. While authorities confirmed that Payne and Wilson knew each other, the specific circumstances and motive behind the fatal shooting were described as key details of the investigation that would be brought to light during court proceedings. The arrest marked a significant step towards justice for Fenqwon Payne and his family.
