Benjamin Anthony Hairston, a 69-year-old man, was found deceased in his Danville, Virginia, residence on November 13, 2018. His death was determined to be a result of gun violence and was investigated as a homicide.
The subsequent investigation by the Danville Police Department led to the arrest of a suspect, David Preston Moss. Moss was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Hairston's death.
Investigators believe the motive for the killing was a 'hit' related to a debt amounting to $150 and two grams of cocaine.
According to information obtained by law enforcement, Moss had allegedly spoken to a witness about the firearm used in the homicide, stating that it had been involved in a robbery and later that it 'had a body on it.' This witness provided crucial information that assisted in linking Moss to the crime.
When authorities initially responded to Hairston's home, they discovered that both the door to the residence and Hairston's car were locked. Investigators were able to locate Moss at an apartment in Danville. A search of his vehicle produced the keys to Benjamin Hairston's house and car. In addition to the murder charge, Moss was also facing a separate shoplifting charge for allegedly stealing a pair of shoes from a local department store the day before the homicide.
