In the summer of 2017, the life of Stephen Oliver Daughdrill, a 27-year-old White male from Stuarts Draft, Virginia, came to a tragic end. On July 3rd, inside his home on Wilda Road, a heated argument with his wife, Marlena Daughdrill, escalated to a fatal confrontation. The couple was reportedly under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the incident.
The argument took a dark turn when Stephen Daughdrill armed himself with a shotgun, and his wife, in turn, aimed a handgun at him. In a desperate and final act, Stephen grabbed Marlena's hands, disengaged the safety on her handgun, and pressed the weapon to his own forehead. The investigation later concluded that Stephen pulled the trigger, inflicting a fatal gunshot wound. Significant gunshot residue found on his hands led authorities to rule his death a suicide.
In the aftermath of the tragic event, Marlena Daughdrill was not charged in connection with her husband's death. However, the investigation brought to light other offenses. She was subsequently arrested on three charges of child neglect and one charge of possession of a firearm while in possession of methamphetamine. The couple's three young children were living in the home at the time.
During her trial, Marlena Daughdrill was ultimately found guilty of the firearm possession charge. This conviction carried a mandatory minimum sentence of two years in prison. While she was not held legally responsible for her husband's death, the circumstances surrounding his final moments led to her own legal battles and eventual incarceration.
