In the early hours of an autumn morning, the life of a one-year-old girl was tragically cut short in a burst of violence that shattered the quiet of her Henrico County home, near Richmond, Virginia. Jaidah Monae Morris, a Black/African American female, was asleep in her bedroom on October 10, 2017, when multiple gunshots were fired through the window. A bullet struck the child in the chest, and despite being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
Her father, Te'Monteke Morris, who was in the room with her, was also seriously wounded in the attack.
The investigation into the senseless shooting suggested it may have been an act of retaliation connected to a separate shooting that had occurred the previous day. For nearly two years, the case remained a painful open wound for the family and community. Then, in July 2019, a significant breakthrough came with the arrests of two men. Derick Walton Jr. and Byron Cecil Archer III were taken into custody and faced a string of serious charges, including felony homicide, conspiracy to commit malicious wounding, and shooting into an occupied dwelling.
The path to justice, however, proved to be complex. In a turn of events in November 2019, the charges against one of the suspects, Byron Cecil Archer III, were dropped by the prosecution. This left Derick Walton Jr. as the primary individual to be held accountable for the death of Jaidah Morris. The investigation also revealed that Walton was allegedly involved in another shooting incident that had gravely injured a five-year-old girl.
