On the evening of April 29, 2018, 19-year-old Breland O. Poole, a resident of Richmond, Virginia, tragically lost his life. A 2017 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, Poole was known for his athleticism and friendly nature. That night, he was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the Ivy Walk Apartments in Chesterfield County after police responded to reports of gunfire around 10:30 p.m. Despite being rushed to Chippenham Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation later revealed that he had left his home earlier that evening to play basketball.
In the months that followed, Chesterfield County Police made significant headway in the case. On September 19, 2018, three individuals were arrested in connection with Poole's murder. The suspects were identified as 21-year-old Antwoine J. Durham, 24-year-old Darrell A. Wilson, and a 16-year-old female named Anayah Naree Daily. Durham, who was already incarcerated on unrelated charges, faced charges of first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Wilson was also charged with first-degree murder and was held without bond. The teenage girl was charged with first-degree murder and taken to the Chesterfield County Juvenile Detention Home.
The investigation uncovered a tragic motive behind the senseless act of violence. It was revealed that Anayah Daily had falsely claimed that Poole had raped her. This false accusation is believed to have motivated the killing. In October 2021, Daily, then 19, was sentenced to serve 35 years in prison for her role in manipulating a close friend to murder Poole. During her trial, she admitted to fabricating the sexual assault story. Antwoine Durham was also convicted of first-degree murder in a separate trial.
