Derrick Bynum, 33, a Black man from Richmond, Virginia, was found in the aftermath of a shooting that brought police racing to the 900 block of North 1st Street on January 10, 2017. Officers arriving at the scene located him down in a parking lot, wounded, in what investigators described as a robbery shooting.
He was rushed to a local hospital, where the fight to keep him alive stretched far beyond that winter night downtown.
More than a year later, on April 30, 2018, he died from the injuries he’d sustained.
As the months turned into years, the case hardened into one of the city’s lingering questions. Detectives publicly acknowledged they had received information, but not enough to close the circle—to name who pulled the trigger, to explain how the robbery unfolded, or to bring anyone into a courtroom to answer for it.
In the public record of appeals for help, no arrest or suspect announcement was presented alongside his name; instead, the message stayed the same: someone out there knows what happened, and investigators want to hear it.
