In the fall of 2024, a Richmond community was shaken by the violent and untimely death of Timothy Raymond Ward. A 34-year-old male resident of Henrico County, he was known for his can-do attitude and positive presence. On the afternoon of Monday, November 4th, an otherwise ordinary day took a tragic turn in the parking lot of the Richmond Justice Center on Fairfield Way.
It was there that Ward was fatally shot, a single gunshot abruptly ending his life.
The investigation into the homicide quickly pointed toward a person of interest, 28-year-old Naim Crews Jr. of Richmond. At the time, Crews was already on the radar of law enforcement, having been taken into custody in connection with a separate incident that had occurred just a day prior. In that earlier event, Crews was accused of armed robbery and the shooting of a convenience store employee on Mechanicsville Turnpike. As detectives delved deeper into Ward's death, evidence began to mount linking Crews to the crime.
By November 15, 2024, the Richmond Police Department formally announced that Naim Crews Jr. was being charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony for the death of Timothy Ward. Reports from sources close to the investigation suggested a harrowing motive for the senseless act of violence. It is believed that on that fateful Monday, Ward witnessed Crews attempting to steal his truck. In a courageous act, Ward gave chase, and it was as he crossed into the parking lot of the Justice Center that he was shot and killed. A review of Crews' past revealed a significant criminal history, including a prior conviction in 2017 for statutory burglary that resulted in a ten-year prison sentence, with seven of those years suspended. As the legal process against Crews began, those who knew and cared for Timothy Ward were left to mourn a man who was remembered as a kind and helpful member of his community.
