The grim discovery was made in Raphine, Virginia, where the young boy and his 43-year-old father, John Ligurgo, were located inside a Jeep that had been set ablaze. Both had suffered from gunshot wounds.
The events leading to this heartbreaking conclusion started to unfold when Jovani's mother, Maria Busone, reported him
missing. She had dropped her son off with his father for a scheduled visitation, but he was not returned at the designated time. A custody dispute was ongoing between the parents, and Busone had previously filed a petition in court expressing concerns about the father's behavior, alleging that he had threatened to leave with their son and not return.
Around the time Jovani was supposed to be returned to his mother, a fire was reported at John Ligurgo's condominium in Coram, New York. Investigators later determined that the fire was an act of arson, with two beds having been intentionally set on fire. It was also discovered that a gun was missing from the residence. Surveillance footage later captured John Ligurgo's Jeep crossing the George Washington Bridge into New Jersey, sparking a multi-state search.
The search ended tragically in the backyard of a home in Raphine, Virginia, where the burned-out vehicle was found. Inside, authorities discovered the bodies of Jovani and his father.
