In the early morning hours of August 30, 2018, the life of 24-year-old Reynaldo Eliazar Araujo was tragically cut short in his Manassas, Virginia residence. Police responded to a report of a shooting at his home in the 10000 block of Massie Street at approximately 2 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered bullet holes in the front door and found Araujo inside, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act. Within days, a swift investigation led to the apprehension of three teenage suspects over the Labor Day weekend. Eighteen-year-old Terrance Tyrese Martin and 19-year-old Ebelin Jojana Lopez, both of Manassas, along with 19-year-old Seni Jiminez Blanco of Manassas Park, were taken into custody. All three were initially charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and held without bond. The investigation continued to unfold, and a fourth suspect, a 17-year-old male, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals at the U.S. border in McAllen, Texas.
Ultimately, a total of five individuals, including another juvenile, were implicated in connection with Araujo's death. In December 2018, a grand jury indicted all five suspects on a charge of lynching, which under Virginia law is defined as an act of violence by a mob resulting in a person's death and is treated as second-degree murder. The group of five went to Araujo's apartment with the intent to rob him. One of the two juvenile suspects was also indicted on a murder charge, and it was determined that both minors would be tried as adults. The suspects faced a range of additional charges, including attempted robbery, attempted armed robbery, and wearing a mask in public.
