In the early morning hours of May 12, 2016, a violent home invasion in Manassas, Virginia, ended the life of 43-year-old Jason Thomas Mannion. Officers responded to a call of a shooting at a residence on Hensley Road around 2:45 AM. Inside, they found Mannion suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The subsequent investigation revealed that the fatal shooting was the result of a robbery. Authorities identified three individuals, who were known to Mannion, as the perpetrators. The investigation led to the arrests of Marquan Antonio Brown, then 25, Jhaire Nathaniel Montgomery, then 19, and Rhebekah Alexis Patterson, then 29. Brown and Montgomery were charged with murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Patterson faced a charge of principal in the second degree to murder. It was alleged that Brown and Montgomery entered Mannion's home with the intent to rob him, and during the commission of the crime, Mannion was shot.
In January 2020, Marquan Antonio Brown pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, statutory burglary while armed with a deadly weapon, robbery, and three counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony. At a preliminary hearing, Patterson testified that the trio had traveled from Culpeper to Manassas with the plan to rob Mannion, and they ultimately stole approximately $700. The cases against Montgomery and Patterson were scheduled to go to trial in the months following Brown's plea.
