On the evening of July 30, 2020, in Manassas, Virginia, a burst of gunfire shattered the night, leaving a community in mourning. When Manassas City Police officers arrived at the 8600 block of Bruton Parish Court around 10:10 p.m., they discovered two men suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. One of the victims was 49-year-old Tommy Campbell, a Black male, who was rushed to a nearby hospital where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. The second victim was also transported to the hospital and fortunately survived.
The investigation into the deadly shooting quickly led detectives to identify a suspect: Christopher Buckner, a 31-year-old resident of Manassas Park. A warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of murder, aggravated malicious wounding, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. A week after the shooting, the U.S. Marshals Service and the Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended Buckner in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. He was taken into custody without incident and began the extradition process to face the charges in Virginia.
