In the early morning hours of September 16, 2018, a domestic dispute in a Chesapeake, Virginia, home escalated into a fatal act of violence, claiming the life of 55-year-old Anthony Smith. The man responsible for his death was his own son, 25-year-old Tevin Smith. The altercation, which also resulted in the shooting of another of Anthony's sons, reportedly began over a misplaced cell phone.
The tragic events unfolded at the family's residence on Bernies Court S. According to reports, Tevin's mother was present during the argument and escaped through a window to call for help from a neighbor's house after hearing gunshots. When police arrived at approximately 1:50 a.m., they discovered Anthony Smith deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound. His other son had been shot in the face but survived his injuries. The surviving brother identified Tevin as the shooter to the police.
After the shooting, Tevin Smith fled the home on foot, prompting a search by law enforcement. He was apprehended later that same day. Tevin was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, aggravated malicious wounding, and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Ultimately, Tevin Smith pleaded guilty to the charges against him. On May 28, 2021, he was sentenced to 38 years in prison, with 23 of those years suspended. This left him with a total of 15 years to serve for the murder of his father and the wounding of his brother.
