In the fall of 2018, the life of a Portsmouth teenager was tragically cut short, leaving a family and a community in mourning. Demonta Faircloth, a 16-year-old Black male affectionately known as 'Doo Doo,' was a sophomore at Woodrow Wilson High School with a love for sports, including football, baseball, and track. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, the third of seven children who brought a wonderful spirit to those he encountered.
On the night of October 2, 2018, violence
shattered the lives of the Faircloth family. Demonta was on Jefferson Street in Portsmouth when he was shot and killed. The incident was part of a triple shooting that also injured two men. The news of his death sent ripples of devastation through his family, who remembered him as a vibrant and athletic young man. His sudden and violent death left a void in the hearts of his mother, siblings, grandparents, and a host of other relatives and friends.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Portsmouth Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Despite their efforts, no immediate arrests were made, and no suspects were publicly identified. The case remained an active investigation as authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to a breakthrough. As time passed, the quest for justice for Demonta continued, with his family and community left to grapple with the unanswered questions surrounding his senseless murder.
