A simmering, decade-long dispute between neighbors over loose and barking dogs culminated in a tragic murder-suicide on an October evening in Roanoke, Virginia. The conflict ended the life of 66-year-old Russell Edghill, a man remembered for his kindness and dedication to helping others.
On the evening of October 16, 2018, Roanoke County police responded to reports of shots fired on Eden Avenue.
Upon arrival, they discovered Russell Edghill and his wife, Lynda, suffering from gunshot wounds between their homes. Russell Edghill was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was subsequently released.
The investigation identified their neighbor, 58-year-old Harry Overstreet, as the shooter. For ten years, the Edghills and Overstreet had been embroiled in disputes, frequently lodging complaints against each other concerning their dogs. Just half an hour before the shooting, police had been called to the neighborhood for another report of a dog running loose. An officer found a member of the Edghill household securing a dog and did not observe any conflict between the neighbors at that time.
Following the shooting, a SWAT team found Overstreet deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, bringing a grim end to the long-standing feud. Authorities indicated that prior disagreements had been settled without police intervention and that Overstreet did not have a criminal history. The investigation confirmed that the fatal encounter stemmed from the ongoing animosity over their pets.
