On April 16, 2023, 31-year-old Steven Don Crowder of Roanoke, Virginia, was fatally shot during an altercation at a 7-Eleven store located on Grandin Road SW. The incident began when Crowder attempted to purchase a tobacco product, leading to a confrontation with the store clerk, Isaiah Baldwin. The situation escalated, resulting in Baldwin allegedly shooting Crowder multiple times. Crowder was pronounced dead at the scene by Roanoke Fire-EMS responders.
