In the early morning hours of November 10, 2018, a tragic series of events unfolded in Hampton, Virginia, culminating in the death of 24-year-old Eric Caesar Witherspoon Jr., a Black male from Newport News. The initial indication of trouble came around 4:53 a.m. when Witherspoon and another man arrived at the Sentara Careplex Hospital, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Shortly after his arrival, Eric Caesar Witherspoon Jr. succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The cause of his death was later determined to be a gunshot wound to his left leg. The second man who arrived at the hospital with Witherspoon was treated for his injuries and subsequently released.
The scope of the morning's violence became clearer about half an hour later, at approximately 5:28 a.m., when police received another call regarding a shooting. This time, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 900 block of North King Street. Inside, they discovered another male victim, identified as 27-year-old Treviyon Lamonta Hill of Smithfield, who had also been shot. Hill was pronounced dead at the scene. Initially, investigators treated the incidents as two separate homicides. However, as the investigation progressed, detectives determined that both Witherspoon and Hill, along with the third injured man, had all been shot at the North King Street location.
In connection with the violent events of that morning, the Hampton Police Division made an arrest on the same day. Jazz Kwame Grant, a 29-year-old resident of Hampton, was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and remains in custody at the Hampton City Jail.
Despite the arrest of Grant, the Hampton police have indicated that the investigation into the double homicide remains active and ongoing. The motive and the specific circumstances that led to the shootings have not been publicly released. Authorities have continued to seek assistance from the public, urging anyone with information that could help identify any other potential suspects to come forward. To date, no further arrests have been announced in the deaths of Eric Caesar Witherspoon Jr. and Treviyon Lamonta Hill.
