On a winter afternoon in Hampton, Virginia, the life of 41-year-old Tarnecia Shevon Smith was tragically cut short. On January 20, 2019, emergency services responded to a three-car crash at the intersection of Nickerson Boulevard and Fox Hill Road around 3:30 p.m.. Inside one of the vehicles, they discovered Smith, who had been shot. She succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The investigation into the female victim's death quickly led authorities to a suspect.
Police identified 42-year-old Samuel Anthony Ashe of North Carolina as the individual responsible for Smith's death. Investigators determined that Ashe had been in the car with Smith and fled the scene after the shooting.
Following the incident, law enforcement issued a warrant for Ashe's arrest. The day after the shooting, Samuel Ashe turned himself in to authorities in Hertford County, North Carolina. He was charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, shooting within an occupied vehicle, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
