In the late summer of 1998, a Hampton, Virginia community was shaken by a brutal crime that occurred within the walls of a family home. On September 10th, 21-year-old Katherine Esther 'Katie' Logan, a female, was found deceased in her residence. An investigation soon revealed a chilling sequence of events. While she was asleep, she had been shot three times in the head. The initial scene was staged to suggest a home invasion, with a bathroom window screen cut and the telephone cord slashed.
This facade, however, would quickly crumble under police scrutiny.
The investigation swiftly focused on Katherine's husband, Mark Wesley Bailey. In a horrifying turn of events, it was discovered that after killing his wife, Bailey had also shot their two-year-old son, Nathan, as the toddler was climbing out of his bed. Miraculously, the young boy survived the attack. In the immediate aftermath, Bailey attempted to deflect suspicion by telling his coworkers that his wife had been threatened and that he had received a phone call claiming she had been abducted. His story, however, did not hold up for long.
Bailey was brought in for questioning and failed a polygraph test. Faced with the evidence against him, he confessed to the murders. He cited his wife's alleged infidelity as the motive for his actions. The weapon used, a. 22-caliber pistol, had been borrowed. With his confession, the picture of a staged home invasion was replaced by the grim reality of a domestic homicide.
Mark Wesley Bailey was arrested on the same day as the murders. His legal proceedings were extensive, moving through various levels of the judicial system. His defense team argued that he suffered from manic depression and borderline personality disorder, which they claimed contributed to his violent actions. Despite these arguments, Bailey was convicted of the murder of his wife, Katherine Logan. He was ultimately sentenced to death for his crimes. After a series of appeals, including a review by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and a final, unsuccessful appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, his sentence was upheld. On July 22, 2004, Mark Wesley Bailey was executed by lethal injection, bringing a final, somber close to a case that had begun with a devastating act of violence.
