On a late afternoon in Hampton, Virginia, a dispute that began over a teenage basketball game escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 50-year-old Lois Bailey and her 25-year-old son, Maurice Bailey. The events of September 24, 2020, unfolded on Apple Avenue, where a simmering conflict between the sons of Lois Bailey and another man, Torrey R. Whitlow, erupted into violence.
An initial physical altercation had seemingly subsided earlier in the day, with Lois stepping in to break up the fight. However, the peace was short-lived.
Later that same day, the argument reignited, this time with fatal consequences. Torrey R. Whitlow, then 35 years old, confronted the Baileys. During the ensuing confrontation, Whitlow produced a firearm and opened fire. Lois Bailey was shot twice as she again attempted to intervene. Her other son, Tyrell Bailey, was also struck by gunfire, suffering a graze wound to the head. In a final, brutal act, Whitlow stood over the already wounded Maurice Bailey and shot him in the head. Lois and Maurice Bailey were pronounced dead at the scene, while Tyrell survived his injuries.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Whitlow fled the scene in a red pickup truck. The Hampton Police Division quickly identified him as the suspect and issued warrants for his arrest on charges including two counts of murder, aggravated malicious wounding, and multiple firearm offenses. A manhunt ensued, and on November 18, 2020, nearly two months after the killings, Torrey Whitlow was apprehended in the city of Hampton by a team of Hampton police and U.S. Marshals.
Torrey R. Whitlow was subsequently tried by a jury for the murders of Lois and Maurice Bailey and the malicious wounding of Tyrell Bailey. He was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and related firearm charges. In December 2024, Whitlow's appeal of his convictions was denied, with the court upholding the original judgment.
