In the quiet neighborhood of Ocean View in Norfolk, Virginia, a tragic event unfolded on the night of May 21, 2019, leading to the death of 51-year-old Brian Peden Austin. Austin, a male resident of the area, was discovered in the 200 block of West Balview Avenue around 11:15 p.m., suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The initial investigation revealed a deceptive and calculated plot that led to Austin's untimely
death. He had been lured to the location under the pretense of meeting a woman he had connected with on a dating app. Text messages showed that Austin had expressed a preference to meet under a streetlight to avoid an ambush, a chilling premonition of the events to come. While parked and waiting in his car, Austin was shot in the left shoulder and chest. In his final moments, he attempted to drive away but crashed into a parked car.

In 2021, Tyron A. Whitaker pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for his role in the 'catfishing ambush.' Subsequently, he was sentenced to serve 13 years and four months in prison for the fatal shooting of Brian Austin.
