In the quiet neighborhood of Lake Kennedy Estates in Suffolk, Virginia, the life of Antoine Deandre Johnson, a 39-year-old male, was abruptly ended. On the night of September 30, 2019, police were called to a residence in the 600 block of Adkins Circle around 10:44 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Inside the home, they discovered Johnson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide quickly led authorities to a suspect. Laquinton Darale Blackwell, a 31-year-old man from the nearby city of Portsmouth, was arrested in connection with the shooting. Initially, Blackwell faced charges of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was taken into custody and held without bond at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail. As the legal process continued, the charges against him were upgraded by a grand jury to include first-degree murder, six counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied building, and another firearm charge.
Despite the initial arrest and the subsequent serious charges, the path to justice took an unexpected turn. When the case went to trial, the prosecution was unable to prove Blackwell's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. This resulted in the acquittal of Laquinton Darale Blackwell on the murder and firearm charges. Furthermore, several other charges related to the shooting were ultimately dismissed.
