In the late hours of an autumn evening in Woodbridge, Virginia, the life of 21-year-old Nathaniel Isiah Hickson was tragically cut short. On October 21, 2019, in a parking lot situated in the 2300 block of Briar Rose Lane, what began as a transaction for marijuana descended into fatal violence. Hickson, a male from Norfolk, had arranged to meet with other individuals, but the encounter swiftly turned into an attempted robbery. It was during this volatile situation that shots were fired, leaving Hickson with a gunshot wound.
Prince William County police officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after 11 p.m., where they discovered Hickson unresponsive. First responders immediately began life-saving measures, and he was quickly transported to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, Nathaniel Isiah Hickson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The initial investigation into the homicide pointed towards a drug-related robbery gone wrong, shattering the late-night quiet of the Woodbridge neighborhood and launching an intensive search for those responsible.
The investigation led by the Prince William County Homicide Unit soon identified two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, authorities were able to locate and apprehend 21-year-old Najoun Devon Courtney and 19-year-old Tre Rose on November 13, 2019. Following their arrests, both men were charged with murder for their alleged roles in the death of Nathaniel Hickson. They were subsequently held without bond as the legal process against them commenced.
