In the winter of 2023, the life of 27-year-old Akeem Rashaud Williams was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in Woodbridge, Virginia. On the evening of January 16th, police were called to the Marumsco Plaza on Richmond Highway around 8:50 PM after reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene with two victims. One, a 22-year-old man, was found with a gunshot wound to his lower body and was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Shortly after locating the first victim, security officers from a nearby shopping center alerted the police to another man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. This man was identified as Akeem Rashaud Williams. Despite the immediate medical aid provided by the officers at the scene and being rushed to the hospital, Williams succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The investigation into the shooting revealed that it was not a random act of violence, but rather stemmed from an ongoing dispute. During the incident, a passing vehicle on U.S. 1 was also struck by gunfire, though fortunately, no one inside was harmed.
For over a year, the case remained under investigation until a significant breakthrough occurred. On January 29, 2024, authorities publicly identified a suspect. Zaire Lee Davis, a 21-year-old man with no fixed address, was charged in connection with Williams' death. The warrants for his arrest included charges of murder, malicious wounding, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. At the time the charges were brought against him, Davis was already incarcerated in Fairfax County for unrelated offenses. Forensic evidence played a key role in linking Davis to the fatal shooting of Akeem Rashaud Williams.
