On Friday, January 3, 2020, Baker was the front-seat passenger in a vehicle traveling on the interstate when gunfire suddenly erupted. Struck in the head, he was rushed to a local hospital for treatment of his critical injuries.
Despite medical efforts, Wykemma Baker succumbed to his gunshot wound two days later, on Sunday, January
5, 2020. Another passenger in the car, a man seated in the back, also suffered from multiple gunshot wounds but was treated at a hospital and subsequently released. The driver of the vehicle managed to escape the incident without any physical injuries.
The Virginia State Police immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. In the days following the incident, law enforcement officials appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for the interstate shooting.
