A simmering argument at a Columbia, South Carolina graduation party on June 3, 2017, tragically escalated, ending the life of 31-year-old Jarritt Demonteze Rodgers. The male victim was attending a celebratory gathering at a home in the 2100 block of Apple Valley Road when the dispute broke out. The festive atmosphere of the family get-together was shattered around 9 p.m. by the sound of a gunshot.
Rodgers sustained a gunshot wound to the neck and upper body.
Neighbors described a chaotic scene, with people screaming and attempting to render aid to Rodgers, who was bleeding profusely in the front yard. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries during surgery at a local hospital.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Columbia Police Department investigators identified a suspect who was present at the scene. The individual taken into custody was 26-year-old Christopher Jamaal Jones, a relative of the victim. The exact relationship between the two men was not immediately clarified by authorities.
Jones was arrested at the location of the incident and subsequently charged with murder. He was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. The investigation suggested that the shooting was the unfortunate culmination of the argument that had occurred during the graduation celebration.
