In the early hours of a June morning, the life of 19-year-old David Green, a male resident of Columbia, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. Green was attending a party on Lawhorn Road in the Blythewood area of Richland County to celebrate his recent graduation from high school. The gathering, however, swelled in numbers, with as many as 70 people present, and the celebratory atmosphere took a dark turn.
Around midnight, an argument broke out between Green and another partygoer,
Keon Grooms. The verbal dispute escalated to violence when Grooms allegedly shot Green in the upper body. When Richland County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call of shots fired, they discovered Green's body at the scene. He was pronounced dead from the gunshot wound.
The investigation into David Green's death led to the arrest of Keon Grooms. He was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. It was later revealed that at the time of the shooting, Grooms was already out on bond for previous weapons and drug charges. In a poignant turn of events, it was shared during a court hearing that David Green's mother had been Grooms' teacher at school. She spoke in court of the devastating impact the loss of her son had on their family.
Following his arrest for Green's murder, Grooms was granted a surety bond with the conditions of GPS monitoring and house arrest. However, he was later arrested again in connection with another fatal shooting at a party, leading to the revocation of his bond in the case of David Green's death.
