In the early hours of January 3, 2020, the life of William Oliver Hurt, a 29-year-old Black male from Richmond, Virginia, was tragically cut short. Police were called to a motel on Chamberlayne Avenue around 7:05 a.m., where they discovered Hurt unresponsive in one of the rooms. He had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The case was immediately investigated as a homicide, with the Medical Examiner later confirming the cause of death.
William, born on October 21, 1990, in Henrico, Virginia, was a graduate of John Marshall High School. Known for his fun-loving nature, energy, and laughter, he was a devoted father to his son, William Hurt, Jr. He was a man of faith, having accepted Christ at a young age, and was united with the Greater Mount Moriah Baptist Church. He had a deep love for his family and enjoyed spending his leisure time playing football, basketball, and being with his children. His sudden death left a void in the hearts of his family and friends, who remembered him as a beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend.
The investigation into William's death progressed, and on January 23, 2020, a significant breakthrough was made. The U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended 44-year-old Gerard A. Hargrove in connection with the murder. Hargrove was subsequently charged with murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, bringing a measure of hope for justice to William's grieving loved ones.
