On a tragic afternoon in Richmond, Virginia, the life of a young Black boy was cut short by senseless violence. Three-year-old Sharmar Hill Jr. was innocently playing outside his family's apartment on Southlawn Avenue on February 1, 2020, when he was struck by a stray bullet. The sound of gunfire suddenly erupted, and in the chaos, Sharmar was hit. His older sister bravely carried him inside, but his injuries were too severe.
Despite being rushed to a local hospital, the young child succumbed to his wounds.
The investigation into Sharmar's death revealed a grim backdrop to the tragic event. Police believe that the shooting was the result of a confrontation between two groups of people who were firing at each other. Sharmar was an unintended victim, caught in the crossfire of a conflict that had nothing to do with him. The day before the fatal shooting, a Lyft driver had been carjacked at gunpoint in the 2600 block of Berwyn Street. A vehicle matching the description of the stolen car was seen leaving the area where Sharmar was shot.
In connection with the carjacking, authorities arrested a man named Antonio Harris. However, he was not charged with the death of Sharmar Hill Jr. The case of the young boy's death remains a painful open wound for his family and the community. In an effort to bring those responsible to justice, the FBI has offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the individuals involved in the shooting. Investigators have received some tips and continue to seek assistance from the public, hoping that someone will come forward with the information needed to close this tragic case.
