In the early morning hours of February 21, 2020, the life of 32-year-old Michael 'Mikey' Christen Davis was tragically cut short in Hampton, Virginia. A Black male from Newport News, Davis was found by police responding to a shooting at the Pembroke Pines Apartments on West Pembroke Avenue around 2:28 a.m. He had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the violent death of Michael Davis led authorities to a suspect. Tyshawn Joseph DeShields, a 30-year-old man also from Newport News, was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. The Hampton Police Division charged DeShields with a litany of serious offenses, including murder, two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, armed burglary, and discharging a firearm within a dwelling.
Following his arrest, DeShields was taken into custody and held at the Hampton City Jail. The community was shaken by the incident, with some residents expressing fear and noting it was not the first shooting in the area. Despite some initial reluctance from witnesses to come forward, the diligent work of the Hampton Police Division allowed them to piece together the events that led to Davis's death and identify a suspect. The case against DeShields was set to proceed through the court system as authorities continued to encourage anyone with more information to come forward to help bring justice for Michael Davis and his family.
